Surface Coatings
TiN (Titanium Nitride)
A physical vapor deposition (PVD) process of placing a thin coating of Titanium Nitride (TiN) 1 to 5 microns thick on the working area of punches and die buttons to provide:
- Increased wearlife
- Rc 80-85 surface hardness (2300 Vickers)
- 40% dry coefficient of friction of steel on steel
- Resistance to galling and peeling
- Thermal stability up to 1100° F (600° C)
Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN)
A physical vapor deposition (PVD) process of placing a thin coating 1 to 5 microns thick of Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN) on the working area of punches and die buttons to provide:
- More wear resistance and toughness than TiN coating
- Rc 90 surface hardness (3000 Vickers)
- 30% dry coefficient of friction of steel on steel
- Resistance to galling and peeling
- Thermal stability up to 750° F (400° C)
Recommended with brass, stainless steel and aluminum alloys.
CrN (Chromium Nitride)
A physical vapor deposition (PVD) process of placing a thin coating of Chromium Nitride (CrN) 1 to 5 microns thick on the working area punches and die buttons in special applications to provide:
- Thermal stability up to 1300° F (700° C)
- Rc 78 surface hardness (1750 Vickers)
- 50% dry coefficient of friction of steel on steel
- Corrosion resistance
- Superior wearlife
- Reduced galling
Recommended with titanium and copper stampings.
PPC (Porter Plus)
A physical vapor deposition (PVD) process of placing a thin layer of this special coating 2 to 5 microns thick over the working area of the punch or die button to provide:
- Surface hardness of 3200 Vickers
- 35% dry coefficient of friction of steel on steel
- Resistance to galling and peeling
- Thermal stability up to 2000° F (1100° C)
- More wear resistance than TiCN
This Porter high end coating has been tested and proven to perform better in the high strength automotive steels used today.
