Nitrogenic Treatment

Porter's Exclusive Nitrogenic Treatment

HOW IT WORKS:

Nitrogenics® is a unique combination of Porter's Zerotemp deep cryogenic treatment (lowered all the way down to below -300°F), and then a salt bath treatment which causes a surface reaction. Components are first hardened and tempered to Rc 60-63 for M-2 and Rc 63-65 for PS steel.

Porter's cryogenic differenceSTAGE 1 - DEEP CRYOGENGIC TREATMENT

A gradual lowering of temperature to below -300°F. After holding this temperature, stabilized soft retained austentite becomes unstable, and a complete transformation to hard martensite takes place. The punch is slowly returned to ambient temperature to minimize thermal strain.

STAGE 2 - NITRIDE SALT BATH

Here the newly tranformed martensite is tempered. Then, the parts are treated in a salt bath where a surface reaction takes place: the infusion of interstitial atoms into the outer layers of the tool, reacting with solute atoms to form extremely fine particles called "interstitial precipitates." The resulting Porter Nitrogenically treated tool will last up to 10 times longer!

Nitrogenically treated tools have a surface hardness of Rc 70 plus and are corosion resistant.
