A physical vapor deposition (PVD) process of placing a thin coating of Titanium Nitride (TiN) 1 to 5 microns thick on working area of piercing punches to provide:

  • Increased wearlife
  • Rc 80-85 surface hardness
  • Low coefficient of friction-50% of steel on steel
  • Resistance to galling
  • No chipping or peeling

Available as a special surface treatment on piercing point on Moly type tool steel punches and die buttons.

Ask for TiN coating piercing surfaces on M series high speed steels and CPM grades of tool steel.


Titanium CarbonitrideTitanium Carbonitride(TiCN)
A physical vapor deposition (PVD) process of placing a thin coating 1 to 5 microns thick of Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN) on working area of Porter punches to provide:

  • Rc 90 surface hardness
  • More wear resistance and toughness than TiN coating
  • 40% coefficient of friction of steel on steel
  • No chipping of peeling

For high performance use TiCN special surface treatment on Porter punches and die buttons

Chromium NitrideCrN (Chromium Nitride)
A physical vapor deposition (PVD) process of placing a thin coating of Chromium Nitride (CrN) 1 to 5 microns thick on piercing punches for specialized applications to provide:

  • Thermal stability up to 1300· F
  • Rc 78 surface hardness
  • 60% coefficient of friction of steel to steel
  • Superior wearlife
  • Reduced galling

For specialized applications use CrN surface treatment on Porter punches and die buttons.
